Biofuturo.net was launched in 2009 on occasion of a series of exhibitions at theGeorgofili Academy on initiative of a research team of Biometeorology Institute and the Centre of Study for the Computer Science in the Agriculture belonging to the Georgofili Academy itself.
Since June 1, 2019 by the fusion of the Biometeorology Institute (IBIMET) and the Trees and Timbers Institute (IVALSA) is born the Institute for the BioEconomy, of which the Biofuturo team is part. The Study Center for the application of Information Technology in Agriculture (CeSIA) set up on 9 July 1982 has completed its activities in December 2017.
The exhibitions: “Environmental routes: History and Innovation. Environmental Instruments and choices for four Tuscany areas, from the first Georgofili interventions up to present day” (2009) and "Resources and material cultures between history and innovation. Natural resources and economic activities in Florence Province by mean the Geogofili studies and handicrafts products" (2010) were staged in order to create a space for dialogue and exchange between people working in the environmental sector.
At a time in which questions are asked frequently about what the future holds in store for us, we feel strongly the need to base our analysis on elements that are as far as possible to sufficiently verified and reliable. The comparison between different situations and experiences is intended to foster the dissemination of knowledge, stimulate the elaboration of convictions that appear entrenched and create the conditions for a more conscious and sincere acknowledgment of what was done by each.
This portal contains the contributions fruit of the work and experience of the founding group and of all those who have been willing to share their knowledge and actions in the common interest.
These initiatives, grouped under one title that is itself synonymous with amplitude and uncertainty, are intended to bring to the attention of all operators in the sector, but also those who for passion or commitment are interested in the relationship between man and the its environment, concrete evidence, precisely facts, that are incentive to the reflection and debate.
Although it may seem superfluous to state that in order to obtain significant results in the environmental field must be widespread participation and a full vision of the complex relationships between the many interacting factors, the logic and the actual mechanisms are often far away from these principles. Therefore, we must accept the fact that, as in almost all sectors of knowledge, several important concepts must be necessarily and frequently highlighted, clarified and reaffirmed. Since we speak of environmental challenges, we are necessarily called to turn our gaze to the future and innovation, but to fully understand what, with effort, we can glimpse we have to draw on all our knowledge and our cultural baggage to transfer them inside of new tools.
For the moment, our interest is mainly directed to the substance of things, at what is detectable and measurable, regardless of the subjective evaluations, but we are aware of the need to bring down even the boundaries between scientific and humanistic culture. Issues arising from the study of processes, that are not "faithfully reproducible", in fact, lead to the realization of the incompleteness of one or other approach and the need to adopt a single language, logical-mathematical, looking for clarity and consistency in the overall representation of the different planes, which for the moment remain purely theoretical.
Today, the environment is seen as a single entity and consistent, but the way towards a its satisfactory understanding and description is still a long. The hope is that, through the recognition of the limits of current knowledge, it is possible to properly direct the efforts of all and the best use of increasingly insufficient resources in the best way to deal with the new and difficult challenges that lie ahead. To succeed in this endeavor we will have to, necessarily, improve our model of the environment without ever confuse it with reality, but always keeping in mind, that in practice, any concrete vision of the world coincides with actual conditions, within which humans and other living beings they live, not knowing yet what is the road that leads to the common wellness
